This townhouse was re-invented via a cooperation of an inspired customer vision, and an ingenious architectural understanding for a family moving to New York from France. The renovation radically transformed an extremely conventional Brooklyn townhouse inside to reflect the couple’s aesthetic sensibilities educated by their own love of traveling, art, and spending some time with friends and household equally. The effect is that a space which is both complex and comfy, developing a refuge in town to the young family’s frantic schedules.
The guiding principle was that the juxtaposition of old and brand new, exposing the natural wear and attractiveness of re-purposed materials. Reclaimed bamboo has been used as cantilevered kitchen shelves. Additional reclaimed brick and wood were utilized during, and were compared with slick minimal finishing substances in that the bathrooms and kitchen. Dark gray painted woodwork added thickness and complexity. Organic and artificial lighting emphasized architectural elements and underlined the experience of going through the home.
